Stuffitis

When people find out Jay and I don't have cable, they usually say things like "how do you survive??" and "wow, i couldn't do that." And I can't help but think....its CABLE! Not food, not shelter, not love. Cable. And it makes me feel guilty...that cable is pretty much the ONLY thing we live without.

Although it feels like so little compared to society's standards, we have so much STUFF...more than most people in the world. I've been struggling with where to draw the line between living in excess and living in a cardboard box on the street.

I don't think our society's need for "things" is healthy, yet I don't know what to do about it or how to live differently. I can take small steps...like living without cable and using that money to help others...but I don't feel like its enough. I want to do more, but often my selfish human nature and society holds me back, not to mention my complete lack of knowing what to do and how to do it.

Thoughts?
